strength training question - how long is too long for recovery?

... or in other words... when life happens and you don't get to work out as often as you used too... how long before you see a decrease in performance?

i know aerobically... we digress very quickly, even a 2 day wkend is enough to make the first run back a lil challenging... 3 days, performace starts to taper off, 4 days... you can see what happened and take a whole wk off and you working the next few wks to just get back to where you were. but strength training it seems you can take a wk completely off and come back strong. how much recovery time or 'life time' before you really have to get back in the gym?

i know recovery is very important, but like most work outters (word?) finding enough recovery time isn't normally the problem.

    I think everyone is different.

When I was working out, I would find if I didn't get back to it after 5 days, there'd be a bit of decrease at the tail end of my workout. I was huffin it.

2 weeks, much more noticeable ... I'd have mid-workout fatigue until I took about 2-3 days to build back up to peak.

3-4 weeks, was basically like cutting my max effort down by 25% and stamina down  15%.

After 4 weeks, back to square one.

And the thing that goes fastest for me, is peak strength - I've always been more of a quick, lithe, explosive kind of guy - so my peak diminishes fast if I don't keep it up. That followed by stomach and obliques. I HATE with a PASSION sit-ups.

You know who'd be a great person to check with on this? CEHoward!

That dude is 65 now and has the body of a 30 year old high jumper!

He probably be an excellent resource in terms of how he copes with fatigue when he doesn't hit it for a few days.

i think it depends on the person.  for me cardio lasts for awhile.  i can take off from running for 2 weeks and come back and blast a the same runs no problem.  weights i'm pretty inconsistent, some days i'll lift like a champ some days not so much.  so it's hard to say for sure, but it seems like if i take off even a week, the general trend is that i'll drop off a few reps at the heavier weights. If i want to see increases in a particular exercise i generally have to supplement that particular muscle group during the other workouts during the week. otherwise if i just hit things once i a week i'm generally just maintaining.  i'm also a skinny dude, i seem to i lose muscle rapidly.  if i stop lifting i drop #'s immediately.  it doesn't seem as drastic with any of my other buddies though.

you shouldn't be sore for more than 2 days.  it really depens on if you are trying to maintain,  or gain muscle.  if gain,  i wouldn't be waiting more than 4 days to work that muscle again.  but,  if that muscle is still tired from the last workout,  let it rest.  that is worse than too much recovery.

ha ha... i thought of cehoward when i posted the article about the 107y/o man who still works out.

i knew everyone was different, but i was looking for a typical range cuz i don't wanna find out what my personal limit is! i didn't know it was that drastically different though. 2wks off of running? i might as well have been smoking!

i know if you are a runner.. you must know a lil bit about nutrition. well, lifting is no different but the nutrition is pretty different it seems. running i use more simple carbs, and alot more potassium and sodium and lifting i use alot more protien and more complex carbs as well. if i eat an orange and expect to lift well... well i'm toast, but a pre-run orange works great for me. likewise, if i eat some eggs before a lifting workout, i can hulk that sh!t out. but eggs before a run? that sh!t would be all over the side of the road. weird thing is though... my body likes heavy meals before a long bike ride. i guess bicycles don't jack my stomach up like running does but i say all this just to say... if you inconsistent... maybe you can mess around with your diet.

I am back at the gym on a daily basis.  Finishing my WOBC at Ft Gordon, which requires an APFT.  I want to make sure that I am not the one who will fail it (never failed an APFT).  I know if I don't work out for a few days, my run suffers, and I am usually running a 8.5 min mile at APFT.  Upper body has always been my weak point, so I'll make sure that during office hours, I drop and do 4 sets of 10 PU's whenever I can, to stay fit.  Like a few people already mentioned, it depends on the person.  I will give my body 1 day rest to recover, but only if I am sore.  If not, then I keep on going.  Oh, and Aleve works for minor sore areas pretty well.

It depends on the person.  For me after about two weeks my peak strength will be the same but my endurance starts to taper.  I can't say exactly when strength starts to fade because if I go more than 3 weeks, it usually turns into 3 months. No

Recovery really depends on your conditioning and the foods you eat.  Nutrients such as a Whey protein will also play a big part in recovering quicker.

Yes, they have other flavors.  My whole fridge is full with protein shakes.  Different flavors, etc.  I just like vanilla, and strawberry for the Myoplex lite, but I do have the dark chocolate as well (emergency).  Then for the other tube type protein...I have the grape, and rasberry, and they also have the fruit punch, kind of tastes the same as the CytoMax, just a bit stronger.  I do recommend it.  I have been hard core with my workout since I left to attend my exercise in Germany last month, and so far, I have lost 18 lbs, and 3" from my waist.  I start doing 30 min cardio in the evening, sprints for 30 min - 1 min sprint, 2 min run, until my 30 min are over, and then my 5 min coolsdown, before hitting the machines.  Taking the 42g whey liquid protein afterwards, I hardly feel anything the next morning.  Also....drink LOTS OF WATER.  I cut out coffee and soda, and alcohol altogether.

Oh, and Aleve works for minor sore areas pretty well.

lol.... How do you know when you've been in the military too long?  When you think the whole world understands all your acronyms...j/k Stick out tongue

LOL..... you got me.  I agree with your statement.  I am drinking protein shakes, take Vitamines for Active Women (GNC is my best friend), and take the new liquid Whey Protein drink (42g) after my workout.  A healthy diet and lots of water, with my workout, is they key to my success.  OK...I'll be quiet now...got to finish packing.  Heading to Ft Gordon early in the morning

yo yo yo -- how many calories in dat shake?

The Myoplex lite has 170 cal, 0 sat fat, 1 g sugar, 20 g protein; the new Whey Liquid Protein has 180 cal, 42 g protein, 0 sugar, 0 fat

what's the name of this shake if i may....

    Stop playing....LOL

do they have other flavors?  grape is good for children's vitamins and all...  i'm thinking like grilled shrimp or supreme pizza.   Pizza

    Geeked

looks good.  i might have to give this a try.  i was sore for 3 days after saturday's race.  Sad

Re: strength training question - how long is too long for recovery?

I almost never need recovery time except when lifting very heavy weights. Heavy weights I take 48 hr rest before hitting that muscle group again.

I guess it may vary depending on the person.

I was in the Army years ago and was in top condition. Not so much because of the army as I was in shape before I joined...Martials Arts, YMCA Boxing, etc. I don't know how some military folks get out of shape so quickly after boot camp. Maybe the higher the rank the fatter you get, hell i dont know....lol

Hell I saw three Military dudes yesterday around lunch time in Dale City pulling up to and walking into TGI Fridays off the Prince William Parkway. The one dude riding the Blue R1 was overweight for sure compared to the other three. To each his own I guess.

yo yo yo shift... you better stop messin with sandy... you just read her workout routine afterall...!

hippies... it's easy to get out of shape after basic training... it's called op tempo. you end up working 12-14hr days, 10 days a wk, eating army food on the go (not the best in nutrition either) and even taking showers is time away from bed. live like that for months at a time and well... you might as well have been smoking.

it's hard work to make time to go work out... sometimes like, sleep or folding your laundry (but def not checking out det com drama) are sacrifices you gotta make.

that and too much Beer... too much Pizza

Oh i had to go ealier so could not finish what I was saying. The out of shape thing also applys to firefighters, Police, etc. It's really just about getting old, metab slows down. So it takes alot more effort to stay in shape.
