    Camera folks...

Look at the Ritz Camera Ads this week....

I can find the Nikon D40 for $449

Or get the D60 for $575 before $75 rebate = $500 or can bundle with 55-200G VR for only $99 more.

    I don't think I really need 10mp though?

    Help a newb!

you're gonna have to add another 9 to the price if you want a VR lens.

I am looking at the same ad...I think I am going to get the D60....while you think you don't need 10MP now...when you get hooked (and you will which is why I am having to buy another after only three years) you will wish you got the 10MP.  You may not print poster sized now but you want the option....not that big of a difference in cost either.

I'm gonna pull the trigger this week.

If you really get the D60 for $500 I'm all over that. I will save and spend the $250 on the 50-200 VR lense for later down the road.

If you get the D60 for $575 then I'm going with the D40 and I'm 1/2 way there on the 50-200 lense Yes.

I'm trying to find a local Ritz Camera now to talk to folks.

to me it makes sense to spend a couple hundred more and get the canon eos rebel xsi 12.2 mp. you get more megapixels and it shoots at 6.5 frames per second. i guess it depends on what you are getting the camera for but i shoot alot of sequences for snowboarding and motocross and the 6.5fps is a big perk for me. canon lenses are a little less expensive too. what i have learned over the years between nikon and canon is, nikons seem to have slightly better optics but canons seem to be a little bit faster.

Why do you want SLR anyway?

Regular cameras have come a long way and in many ways they can help you take better photos.

Image Quality, Speed and variety of lenses. I like a telefoto lense as I take outdoor shots a good bit. Zooming in on animals far away can be a problem with your typical point and shoot.

I have a pocket camera(size of a pack of cigs) and a 10x optical zoom point and shoot. I'm looking for a little more that what these have to offer in the areas I've pointed out above. I will still probably carry my pocket camera more than the SLR but when I'm out in the woods..I will carry the SLR.

Went to Ritz and the woman there didn't know chit. I know more about her product in an hours worth of research than she did No.

With that said...found out more info on the D40 vs D60.

D60 comes with 18-55 VR lense standard($50 upgrade on the D40). It has 10.2 mp and and D40 has 6.1mp. Both look to have the same body.

Gonna check out costco and see if the 55-200mm is VR or not.

Not bad for that package but you will want to get a bigger memory card!

1 GB wont hold that much

go for 4GB's and above and make sure you get one with a fast read access

Found some good ones on new egg

    Cannon's seem a touch more expensive....and I'm cheap. The 400Dxti is roughly $679

    GIXXER7FOOL!:

i shoot alot of sequences for snowboarding and motocross and the 6.5fps is a big perk for me.

I'm finding that my 5fps D200 isn't quite cutting it in the speed department for action photography. I'm thinking of stepping up to the D300, which'll do 8fps with the vertical grip attached. I'm also psyched about the high-res lcd on the back. Big jump going from a 200K dot 2.5" to a 900K 3" lcd. Maybe I'll actually be able to judge critical focus without having to go to the computer to find out. However, I'm wary of switching from CCD to CMOS. I'm not happy about the rolling shutter artifacts I see on CMOS action vids( i.e. gopro), but I don't know if you'd have the same problems with stills.

I'd love to go hardcore and get that D700 for the 35mm size sensor, but that joint is $$$$...

btw, I got 2 sweet, gently used D200 bodies for sale if anyone's interested.

    Budah79:

That is a pretty good deal man Yes

    D60 = $725 with both VR lenses

    D40 with 18-55 non VR lense = $449   + 250 for 50-200 VR lense = $699

So for $25 I get 10.2mp rather than 6.1mp, plus a camera case and 1gb card. I have a 4 gb for my GPS that I can switch over to the camera
