yay fun... track day! + pics

well... I drank a ton of PBR on July 4th and watched the fireworks show from my back deck.

Some embers hit the hill side on the row of houses right next to me

It was interesting watching all the drunks trying to get their cars out of the fire zones before the fire dept and cops got there.

loaded up after the drama was over and headed to the track at 5am the next day

I signed up in A group literally the day before, which was pretty cool. There's always spots open in A group, so I never have to worry about signing up for a spot 2 months beforehand. I looked at the list and there were only about 14 people in A group for that day. Lots of open track!

I got to ride a couple laps and play around with different lines, braking points, and basically slow down a bit to see what worked and what didn't. I sort of regret not borrowing a lap timer, but oh well.

It was about 100 deg out and no cloud cover, so the black suit was like wearing a garbage bag. Next year I'm getting a white suit. Picked up the pace a little later on in the day and had some fun playing around with some of the control riders that were on literbikes. I felt really good throughout the day and didn't have any "oh craaaap!" moments. Tires were gripping really well and my suspension was working well too. I finally managed to calm the bike down in T8 (about 140mph entry speed) and get the front tire to stop dancing around so much.

Around lunch time, I ran out of gas in the generator and couldn't figure out how to get the cap off the damn thing (I had borrowed the genny from my roommate). It was hot enough that a half lap would have the tires cooking anyways, so it was no big loss.

    Lots of fun!

My clutch is pretty much toast and there are some other little things that need tweaking (like fixing a nasty exhaust leak), but it's pretty fun being able to just tear around and have fun. There were a couple of red flags, but fortunately nothing too serious. Very smooth day and I am excited to go racing again on the 20th!

nice report and shots,  triple.  form is noice! Yes

get a white or silver suit bro.  silver may be even cooler than white since it reflects light.  you might look like a baked potato though.  heh heh.  Smile

that's the plan. getting myself a white/burberry custom suit since NJK leathers is 100 yds away from where I work.

    here's the best part...

I am racing at WSIR 7/19 and 7/20

    Track day WSIR on 7/27

Track day at Buttonwillow Raceway AFM 8/2

    SWEEEEEEET! hahaha

I kind of miss Summit Main though... I really wonder what kinds of times I could run on that track since I am getting slightly better at riding a motorcycle.

I agree with my buddy Shift: Lookin' good, 'Stack!

Were you on the "big" track at Willow, or the "Streets"? I like both of them, but I never quite got the hang of ("hairy" & "never-ending") Turn 8 on the "big" track.

I rode two track days at Buttonwillow in July '04 and nearly melted! It gets HOT out there in the desert (I suggest wearing a perforted suit liner to "wick" the sweat away)! I also found it difficult to get my bearings on that track because there's so little change in elevation.

You've got some good public roads to ride on out there too: The Ortega Highway (from the coast to Lake Elsinore), The Angeles Crest Highway (from La Canada to Big Bear, and don't forget to stop at Newcomb's Ranch for lunch), and if you get down to San Diego: Palomar Mountain (I prefer the "fast" side).

I'm jealous, dude. Your report makes me want to return to Cali. Enjoy!

    THanks guys Yes

I race at the big track - haven't done streets, although maybe that will happen sometime this year. I like the big track a lot, and T8 really isn't that big if you go through it in 6th pinned. T9 comes up REAL fast.

BW is a fun track, although I have only run it once clockwise and once counterclockwise. I like the CCW variation and there is elevation change if you run the config with lost hills and sunset. The thing that bothers me most about being out there isnt so much the temp, but all the flies.

I pretty much pass on the public road calamari-fest, but there are some nice ones out there. I stay off of ortega because it's pretty much a death trap. There are a lot of cool local roads that you dont hear about like GRR, Banner Grade, and Wynola. I've just been so booked up with track time that I don't have the time to go weekend riding on the street.

BTW - My GSX-R1000 might show up in an issue of SuperStreetbike magazine this summer.
