    Tough...but worth it.

Since my commute to work has increased from 3 miles to 50 miles... and my gas is no longer free...I wanted to see if I could strech my gas dollar. So I decided to try and drive slower. Shifting at around 2krpms, and averaging 60mph on the highway. Let me tell you... doing 60mph for any length of time is waaay harder than I thought it would be. I have always been a fairly aggressive driver. To have people pass me like I'm standing still was tough. I tried to find people already doing 60ish and get behind them. Now the CRX already gets decent mileage. I was averaging about 35 or so with mainly highway. thats 70-80mph depending on traffic. I calculated 48.7mpg today. I'm going to keep doing this for at least 2 more tanks to try and get a decent average.

The funny thing is I noticed that because of traffic... my actual commute time is almost identical to when I was doing 80. The difference is I was doing 80...then hitting 50mph traffic sooner. Now I do 60...and just hit the 50mph traffic later. No more hurry up and wait.

I do find that it seems like a longer drive though. Before I was always looking for an opening. Or calculating exit routes in case someone stopped shorter than expected. Now I just put along. I think with the money I save in gas...I'll put a better sound system in the car to help pass the time  Smile

So if gas prices are killing you. Slow down... it helps.

    But that's just my opinion.

Nice....I try to set my cruise at 68mph or 70( in a 65 mph zone). I got 28 mpg out of my 265hp 3.5liter car last tank Yes.

What model CRX do you have? I've been trying to find an HF for ever but no luck. I also been trying to find a civic VX with no luckNo.

It is really hard to drive 60mph, I'm not at that point yet lol

where could you find a place to do 80 in rush hour?

I have an Si. Decent mileage...still gets up and goes when you want it to.

Yea as soon as gas starting going up..HF's were getting snapped up like crazy.  I have seen more CRX's in the last 3 months than I have seen in the last 3 years.

You could probably find a CRX DX for a decent price if you look around.

I'm going to put larger wheels on mine for better highway cruising as well.

    But that's just my opinion.

    I'm looking for sure Yes.

I'm sure you already know...but look for the tires with better rolling resistance also.

yup alot of ppl start buying new gas efficient cars...but they don't realize that its their driving habits that's causing the horrible mpg...just pretend there's an egg between your foot and the gas pedal...

i feel you mnky...i've been feathering the gas on the highway lately too going a lil above 60mph...with my car in 6th gear that equals ~2krpm the whole time...

I've done this test...i drove like i used to drive on one tank of gas and got 25% less mpg than if i drove conservatively...hell its boring and slow and annoying, but its money in your pockets Smile

I couldn't do it.  I'm an aggro driver too and after I get a ticket (3 in my lifetime so far) I tell myself that I'm going to slow down from now on and only do five over.  Never happens, I just can't drive slow.

Yah no kidding. Some people get up to 90+mpg. I'm guilty of using DFCO on almost every downhill, turning off the car at long lights that I just missed, and coming within centimeters of someones bumper because I don't want to stop at a red light (lol) The SUV's flying by me on the highway were unsettling at first, but I guess if you're getting shytty gas mileage already, why bother to slow down?

I'm determined to get 50mpg on a tank before the end of the summer.

it's all about getting a better stereo...at least make the car more tolerable to stay in for long periods.

but ya, +1 on the drive slower = get better mileage...i can see mid-low thirties if i take it easy...and high teens if i don't.

that's what i do.  the second i get on the highway,  i'm looking for my "windshield" to break the wind for me.  i did 370.5 miles of driving over the weekend and drafted every truck and rv i could find.  i ended up getting 13 gallons of gas for those miles,  which equaled 28.5 mpg.  for a '93 chevy s-10 with 2 people and a bunch of camping and biking gear,  i was alright with that.  i usually get just over 30 if it's me and an empty bed with the tailgate down.  i find myself short shifting into 3rd gear at 20mph,  4th gear at upper 20's and 5th at 35mph.  i don't worry about speeding tickets anymore,  but i do worry about a ticket for following to close.  heh heh

Also according to Mythbusters.... putting your tailgate down DECREASED mpg. The said the mesh tailgate thing was best

well,  i don't have the mesh tailgate,  gatorgate,  or whatever it is.  i'd like to see that episode of mythbusters to see how it works.  i have heard shitpee saying it is better with the tailgate up,  and we all know he is the aerodynamics encyclopedia  for motorcycles...   i guess i'll give it a shot and see what i find,  mileage wise.

screw it...I likes my big 4 door GMC

I cut back on junk food and stopped drinking beer...that way I can afford my < 20 MPG..screw a small death trap car..if I was going to do that, I'd just ride on 2

anyone wonder why when the price of a barrel of oil goes up, gas prices follow quickly, but when it goes down, as it has the last few days, prices at the pump remain constant?

and what's with congress calling out "big oil" for their 4% profit on a gallon of gas when they, the govt, get's 15% per gallon?  the feds got their noses into too much shekt
