    Pyro:

Each floor of the tower would rotate independently, architects claim, creating an ever-shifting shape.

That looks like the hotel me and Bumblebee stayed at on our trip to Cybertron. Yes

    good one.  Yes  LOL...

    dang that's cool!

oil money? there is such a large foriegn population (including Americans) there in the middle east (due to all the contract work)... that's where they have a market, and thus... that is where they been harvesting.

those contractors make a sh!t load of money (that includes OUR tax dollars at work) and they are far from family. what better way to blow off some steam (and money) than at some crazy tourist city?

oil money... is that all yall think about?

exactly what i thought... what's the point?

It's fricken cool. That's the point.

Whats the point of painting your fairings different colors? What's the point of any shape building besides square and rectangle?

Who besides you and a few other dorks want to live in a utilitarian world draped in grey paint?

Spending a few hundred bucks to paint a fairing is hardly the same magnitude financially and in complexity as building a rotating building. Shoot, why don't we start paving roads in gold then? Make houses that levitate and cars that run nuclear power. Because there's an element of practicality that factors into most reasonable decisions. A rotating building hardly has any practicality to it.

It's perspective man. If you make 20k a year... 100 on fairing paint might seem pointless as well. It doesn't make you go any faster. when you have 30 trazillion dollars... a rotating building is cool and not as big of a deal. especially if its an investment. nuclear cars are a great idea. streets of gold? why not. if you have the money. levitating houses would be awesome. If I was rich enough I would be all over that. It's a cool thing. something you obviously don't get.
    But that's just my opinion.

I went in '97 during a carrier deployment.  Seemed westernized and more lenient towards women.  ....by far the cleanest place I've seen ever.  I was only an E-4 then so I mostly window shopped and dreamed.  Watched a bellboy at the USO in Jebel Ali leave in a Ferrari, blew my f***in' mind.  Saw the Burj during its construction, the Mall of the Emirates, the gold Souk....

If the bellboy has a ferrari, it's not thanks to his bellboy salary - even in Dubai. Probably a kid with rich parents.

Don't they keep a ton of indians and other SE asians in near indentured servitude for construction and most menial jobs?

I heard that skilled professionals from the US can get good jobs there, but it's not a good overall career move and the pay may be great, but it's not 'get rich' great...

wow... i guess i can respond to that. 120 becomes normal when you coming from a daily high of 110. that is what deployed soldiers in afganistan do. serving your country is just that... service.

i hear iraq is even hotter. the hottest that i've ever been was kuwait. friggin 135. no need to dry your hands. they dry in seconds on their own. leave a water bottle outside... even in the shade? you got instant soup in under 5 min. i left my tent and saw some young private on trash duty and i figured... what the hey... lemme help a brother out. and i grabbed the lid of the tent trashcan... big mistake! it was like grabbing that pizza pan for them sams club premade pizzas with your bare hands. i remember wearing gloves all summer long in afganistan... just to use my tools and actually be able to touch parts. what was i thinking with a trashcan lid. i is stoopid yo.

heck after that... the daily high of 100 doens't seem so bad. at least there arn't any mortars flying in to bamaville.

as far as dubai... i've seen the pictures (on my buddies cameras... they got to go on pass... me? i had to work!) dubai is like they say it is. according to them, it's very touristy and very nice and very fun. i hope i get to go someday.

and to comment on the why do it?/excess whatever point... i say this: it's an engineering feat. why build a building so tall that planes run into it? no i not talking about 9-11.... i talking about the many planes that run into the sears tower and the empire state bldg and also the world trade center when it existed. just imagine the final words exchanged in the cockpit. "uh sir... theres a wall directly in front of us..." "bullsh!t... how can there be a wall floating in the sky?" "uh sir?" bam! the end.

ballers ride around in escalades, playas have hot women all over then... engineers build cool sh!t. das just it.

it's great money but it depends on your skill. i knew a guy who flipped burgers at the dfac in bagram who make 80k. the bus drivers made about the same. i met a security guy who actually worked IN dubai... he made just under 100k. THEN there was the boeing rep working with us... he cleared 300k/yr easily.

all these people go to dubai to play. heck... why not blow 10k this wkend? who knows... maybe next time you'll be running from a mortar attack?
