    greytop:

screw it...I likes my big 4 door GMC

I cut back on junk food and stopped drinking beer...that way I can afford my < 20 MPG..screw a small death trap car..if I was going to do that, I'd just ride on 2

anyone wonder why when the price of a barrel of oil goes up, gas prices follow quickly, but when it goes down, as it has the last few days, prices at the pump remain constant?

and what's with congress calling out "big oil" for their 4% profit on a gallon of gas when they, the govt, get's 15% per gallon?  the feds got their noses into too much shekt

This isn't about car size. Doing 60 instead of 80 in your big truck will net you better mpg as well. Lets leave the politics in a politics thread.

    JDog:

worth what?  the whole $2.00 you saved?  Congrats... now you can spring for a 'GRANDE' cup from 'bucks.

at least stay out of the passing lane, thx.

    Dog

I save about $2.70 a day. Doesn't seem like much. but thats  $13.50 a week. Now if it took me longer to get to work...yea...I'd agree with you 100%. but it takes me the exact same amount of time going 60. Now if I drove at night when there was no traffic. I'd probably bump it up.

It's weird because when some guy comes blowing past me....2 miles later when there is traffic... I'm right behind him.

    But that's just my opinion.

it's totally related, and a lot more worthwhile talk than your measly 13.70 or whatever a week..I'm payin over 500 bucks a week in federal taxes alone...300+ to state and they gotta grab 15% at the pump too...it's outright robbery...that's almost 4 grand a month not counting sales and personal property tax

gimme a break with your silly cruise control and drafting techniques...you want to save money..vote the damn spenders out of office as well as those who want to have a BIGGER federal government

not to mention the whole biofuels bs has increased prices of all commodities in general (the foods you eat.) But we have to save the precious penguins in Antarctica and the polar ice caps and the world will perish in the year 2050. Oh and they want to feed the poor. Guess what? The biofuel bs has raised seed prices which directly affects the price to feed the poor. NoNo

    Re: Tough...but worth it.

    ahh yes...the tax complaining.

repubs get into office by telling the little guys that they are paying too much in taxes.  the little guys feel it because they see they made 200bucks a week and 50 out in taxes and they're pissed....tehy WANT that 50!!!

so they vote the repubs into office...and the repubs cut taxes alright....on the big corporations.

if you wanna cut your taxes...start saving your money into tax advantaged retirement plans...sure u can't spend it now but your azz will be happy when you turn 60 alright...start claiming your mortgage interest deduction...and fer chrissakes stop spending so much money on 500channels of big screen LCD and jetskis.  people spend themselves poor.

you wouldn't believe the crazy amounts you can deduct from your taxes for saving into qualified retirement plans...literally HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars a year.  makes the mortgage interest deduction look paltry by comparison.  you just need to know where to go to get the advice.

lol... greytop you have to look at it in different way.

as a consultant for the government you shouldn't be angry at the government for raising tax revenue to pay your salary.

the government taxes us and spends it.  all that money goes back into the economy.

i'm not going to touch how the government spends its revenue and how inefficient it is...  that's another topic within itself.

so if you want the government to cut taxes ask for a pay cut. Stick out tongue

    now back to gas...

want know the secret to consuming less gas on your commute to work?

    move closer to work!!!

all this talk about getting 50mpg on a gallon of gas is all good and dandy but you are still consuming the energy you are trying to save.  also i still dont understand why people aren't car pooling.  we are using energy least efficient way.  i dont care if gas reaches $10 per gallon. it might make us realize we are a nation of waste.  i dont think it will reach $10 that would cause too much demand destruction, we are having that now.  prices will fall and i just pray we dont go back to our old ways of consuming energy.

ps: greytop dont be angry at the tax rate be pissed at the trade deficit. also another topic.

not joking... with the time and money a person will save by moving closer to work will be worth it.  i didn't mention that the quality of life would go up.  people always talk about the reason they live so far because it's cheaper.  do the math.

-the time you spent in traffic- pay yourself your salary, time is money.

    -gas

-wear and tear on the car

    -etc...

you talk about home values the farther way form the beltway home tend to be worth less.  also the homes farther from the job center dont appreciate as fast as the closer in and in a down turn hold there value more.  per square foot they are worth more.

if someone wants to live in bumfack egypt that's their choice.  i just dont buy living far way from work saves money.  if they can't afford to a home rent.  they houses are too expensive look in a less desirable neighborhood.  at one point in time people didn't want to live in georgetown look at it now, same applies to dupont circle, etc.  you have to remember the time when fair housing wasn't fair.

    Yes

I been trying various driving techniques to get my MPG average to go up, I have now decided that for my 10 mile commute to work there is almost no change in driving habit that will make a noticeable impact at the gas pump and have stopped worrying about it for now.

    Re: Tough...but worth it.

It's not often I do this in forums but here we go....

    STmaven:

    move closer to work!!!

    +1 Yes

I live four miles to work, and most every day I get there by pedal power.  Yes, I do bicycle by the gas stations to remind myself why I do this.

In all fairness, though I do intentionally look for a place to stay in order to be close to work.  I was even doing this when gas was $1.00 a gallon back in '99 because I hate commuting at all costs.

In defense of those stuck with long commutes, there are factors beyond one's control.  Yes, you might live close to work for now, but in this uncertain economy, tomorrow you could end up looking for work, and guess what, your next job is probably not going to be close.  Moving is a pain, BTDT, probably easiest to stay put and use some tricks as explained here to lessen the burden of a long commute.

Now 48.5 mpg in a Honda CRX.  Wow, I barely get 40 on my motard.  So much for two wheels saving money.  Of course approved spirited riding techniques are hardly eco friendly.  We're supposed to roll on that throttle just before we hit apex.  So in my case, br-r-a-a-a-p-p, my bike conveniently telling me I'm going the right thing.. Man, that's not gotta be good for the gas mileage, though.  Heck the proper way to get through a corner, then, is to coast through it, LOL.  Don't waste energy braking for a corner, go in at the higher entry speed.  So, you don't need the throttle, just coast through, LOL.  Not safe but certainly cheaper.

I did a calculation though.  Hospital bills are much more expensive than gas, even at $4.00 a gallon.  I think I will stick with the approved spirited riding techniques, even if it means my mileage dipping below the 40 mpg.
